Students in 9^th – 12^th grades may participate in the High School Envirothon. The Envirothon provides students with the opportunity to compete with other schools while learning how to steward our natural resources. The format of the Envirothon is an all-day competition against 4-5 person teams from the county. This year’s competition will be on May 6, at Shikellamy State Park. The winning school from each county gets an all-expense paid trip to the state competition and a chance to compete at the national level. The learning objectives are aligned with the Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology.

The Envirothon curriculum consists of subject matter on the following topics: aquatics, wildlife, forestry, soils and “Protection of Groundwater through Urban, Agricultural, and Environmental Planning” (2010 current issue). All study materials are available at envirothonpa.org.

 

 

BCS students in grades 7-12 collect and analyze chemical, physical, and biological water quality data in streams of the Fishing Creek watershed. From 2007-2009 students in Physical Science and Chemistry classes studied Little Fishing Creek with Science in Motion Educators under a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Commission. In that project students used Susquehanna River Basin Commission data collection standards and collected ten data sets on flow, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity. Ten other water quality parameters were tested from samples collected across the water column.
